H,
There is something that may
happen when we start reflecting inward at the things we have done and how we
must change. It begins to feel like we are more lost than found and the sting
of all our wrongdoing grates more than perhaps it should. This is fine. Well,
it is not fine but it is to be expected. We are used to having many faces. We are
learning to have one true face. There are things we have never admitted to
ourselves. There are shadows from which we have always ran. Now, we do not have
to. It is time to own up so we can finally be free.

This is not self-flagellation.
This is just learning to be one whole person. God calls people who have
committed unspeakable crimes. He calls souls we would disregard as lost. He
calls us even when we are full of the ancient landmarks of our shame and loss
and sins that cripple the heart’s ability to reform itself. There is a point
way beyond the moral superiority we claim. There is a place of honesty where we
do not have to be self-righteous because the sun of righteousness has risen
above us and all our dirt with healing in His wings. All we have to do is
connect our personal prose with His overwhelming passion and love. All we have
to do is be honest of those things we would rather leave unsaid and
unconfessed.

I say “all we have to do”
knowing that though it is not easy it is at least simple. There is a grace that
runs through the whole process. No one can come to the light unless they are
called. No one can come to the light except by grace. There is a calling on
every human soul to this light and there is grace through Christ for the
deepest, darkest soul to stumble into the door and be free. Even you and I.
