There is a path that is laid out for you, divine and chosen. Following it faithfully is following the ordained map of your life towards eternity. Then there is what you have convinced your self is the best path for you, a different path you mapped out yourself and intend to chart. The destination of this second path often has very little to do with the eternal. Instead, it focuses on earthly milestones: school, romantic relationships, work, wealth.

Desiring these things is not in itself wrong. The problem is prioritising them over the divine. What we consider living is only an existence on this plane. Real living, divine living, is eternal. So how do we expect to follow our shortsighted plans to the eternal?

This is why we are called to forgo all earthly longings and plans and come instead to the path of the divine. We come to the divine path and on our way we often encounter the earthly milestones that we have placed such importance upon.

Give up your own way because you cannot even see half of the picture. What you think is a full map barely covers a neighbourhood in the context of time. Give up this small piece of time and life that you are holding on to so tightly and follow instead a path that charts the full scope of the eternal.
