M,

In times of trouble who do you turn to? If you’re looking for help from people you’re sure to be disappointed.

This is not to say that you mustn’t accept help from others. That’s unrealistic and it doesn’t foster the spirit of community that is such a pivotal part of our faith. But looking first to a human being much like yourself instead of the divine is a problem, for the simple reason that what God can do, we cannot.

The truth of it is this: relying solely on another person the way we ought to rely on God puts too much pressure on that person. And when they inevitably fail to meet all your needs as you see them, it puts a strain on your relationship with the person.

God provides. God comfort. God heals. God saves. God redeems. God hears. God helps. And sometimes he does that by sending someone to you. But making that person the source of your help is putting them on a pedestal that they never belonged. You forget that they are flesh, just like you. And you come to expect things from them that can only come from God.

Look instead to the divine and let Him answer your prayers.
