M,

Love is too big a concept to teach in a class. There is almost no counselling for it that can be truly effective. The lectures I have been part of are always defensive. They seem to think that the most important part of loving is avoiding hurt. They try to put limits on the most boundless idea in the universe.

Love is not one thing. We are told it is a set of actions that must be constant no matter what the object of love does. It “believes all things, endures all things” and it does not relent. It does not mean folding at the first sign of affection. It means standing in the truth of things. It is hard to teach but it is something we learn to do. We wake up everyday with kindness, actually not summarizing people or understanding them too quickly, and over the course of our natural life, and beyond, we begin to see we are not that different or apart. We are essentially learning by trial and fire, how to love ourselves.
