There is this idea that what was always meant for you will find you. And sometimes it is – perhaps cynically – countered with the idea that you have to go out searching for what is yours. Maybe somewhere in the middle lies the truth.

This journey that we embark on, this path that we take, is never truly static since the idea is moving closer to the goal of eternal salvation. Whatever comes with that journey is – in a way – meant for you. But since you are not static you have been moving ever closer to it with each new step. However, you probably weren’t conscious of that while you walked the path. So perhaps in a way, it also found you where and when it needed to.

Honestly speaking this seems like an overcomplication of a simple affair. Whether you found it or it found you there really is only one thing of note: you are not meant to chase the minor satisfactions of a temporary world. That is all.

These satisfactions will come. A lot of them over the course of a lifetime, to be sure. But that is not the eternal pursuit and so it cannot be the present preoccupation. What your soul longs for is not the fleeting victory of chasing after and getting this one thing in this one life, whether that be wealth, a job, or even a relationship. None of those things can fill you up. None of those things have the lasting satisfaction that an eternity with God has. And simply comparing the small taste of that eternity we get to experience in life to that dissipating joy of things like a promotion or a paycheck will show you that.

All these things are fine. There is nothing inherently wrong with them. The problem comes when our focus shifts from our desire to chase after God to a new desire to acquire earthly wealth and possessions. Because people leave or they pass on. Bank accounts empty. New purchases lose their glimmer. Jobs come to an end, one way or the other. But God is constant. And the thing that is for you, the thing that is your portion and possession, is eternity with a constant God.
